Google Assistant, the intelligent software agent by Google is now available for integration into third party hardware. Google has announced that it is making the developer preview of the Google Assistant SDK available to those who want to start building hardware prototypes with integrated Google Assistant. The SDK is ideal for prototyping on Raspberry Pi based devices, but contains support for many other platforms. Some use cases indicated by Google include robots and smart mirrors.
Those interested in integrating the Google Assistant SDK into commercial products are encouraged to contact Google. The announcement includes a demonstration of what is possible with the Google Assistant SDK by a Pittsburgh based innovation studio known as Deeplocal. The device is a chatty DIY mocktail mixer accompanied with instructions on how to build one on your own. The hardware and source code for the Mocktails Mixer is open source, and available on GitHub.
Google Assistant was initially introduced in the 2016 I/O, Google’s annual developer conference. Initially available on Google Home, and the chat client Google Allo, Google Assistant is finding its way to more Android devices. In December 2016, Google Assistant added local language support for Hindi. Google is also planning to add payment capabilities to Allo.
