WWDC 2017: Apple’s laptop range may get hardware upgrades to keep up with Microsoft’s Surface laptops

Microsoft recently announced its first serious laptop offering with the Surface Laptop. The laptop features decent specifications, given its price and build quality, and will compete with similar offerings from various manufacturers in the Windows ecosystem. However, the Surface Laptop has just one competitor in particular in its crosshairs and that is the sole reason for macOS’ existence, the Apple MacBook Air.
The 9 year-old laptop has received minor design changes over the years and has been criticized for offering too little with outdated chipsets in comparison to its Windows-powered counterparts.
So is Apple doing anything about its most affordable mobile macOS offering? Well, according to a report by Bloomberg, it is but not for the reasons you want it to.
The report cites insiders and points out that Apple is planning to launch three new laptops this year. The Cupertino giant’s laptop range will get faster Kaby Lake processors with some other minor improvements.
There will also be a new version of the 12-inch MacBook which was first introduced in 2015 and then refreshed in 2016. This time around, we can expect another hardware refresh with a faster processor and nothing else.
Coming to the one laptop that is keeping Apple’s laptop sales alive, the good old MacBook Air will get some hardware updates with a faster chipset and hopefully a better display to keep up with Microsoft’s newest Surface Laptop offering.
Lastly, there’s Apple’s recently launched MacBook Pro lineup that will get hardware updates with newer chipsets and hopefully some additional RAM options.
Indeed, this is Apple’s move out of desperation in light of growing criticism for ignoring its MacBook and Mac lineup for years. A majority of its product lineup save for the recent MacBook Pro laptops are outdated and are seriously need of updates considering that high price tags that Apple demands for. Hopefully, this year’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) set to take place from 5 June to 9 June in San Francisco, should see a few announcements along with an expected add-on in the form of a Siri speaker.
