Android Oreo (Go Edition) Released For Low-powered Phones

Android Go is Google’s low-end version of its mobile operating system, primarily created for emerging markets with low-data speed. This effort has also been accompanied by the development of apps like YouTube Go and Android Go. Now, the latest version of this Android has been shipped by Google in the form of “Android Oreo (Go Edition).”
Android Go was first showed off by Google at this year’s Google I/O developer conference. Android Oreo Go has been made available to OEMs, which means that it won’t be available to the customers instantly. After the release, OEMs can start producing the low-end phones powered by Android Oreo Go.
Running on devices with 512MB to 1GB RAM, the Android Oreo Go experience will comprise of three major components:
  • Improved OS with security benefits and better data management
  • New set of Google apps for lighter experience: Google Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Google Play, Chrome, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, and Files Go
  • Specially crafted Play Store that highlights apps designed to work best on Android Oreo Go
As per Google’s claims, on an Android Oreo Go-running device, an average application is about 15% faster. Also, thanks to the storage optimizations, preinstalled Google apps take about 50% lesser space. As a result, one would get twice the free storage.
With the help of default data saver features, one can manage which apps can suck background data. On the security front, Google Play Protect will work round the clock to scan the app installs; it works even if you’re online or you’ve downloaded the app from a third party app store.
Google has also unveiled its Indian partners for the first Go devices, which might arrive in early 2018. There’s no word on the availability of Android Oreo Go devices in the US or Europe.
